Newly installed ACS President E. Christopher Ellison, MD, FACS, MAMSE, chose “Surgeons United” as his presidential theme. He explained its meaning during the Convocation Ceremony at Clinical Congress in San Diego.

More than two dozen surgeons, trainees, and others were honored with special awards presented during Clinical Congress 2022. Recognition included the Distinguished Service Award, Inspiring Women in Surgery Award, Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum Award, and awards for philanthropy, volunteerism and humanitarianism, advocacy, mentorship, professionalism, teaching, posters, and research.
For more than 20 years, high school students in Clinical Congress host cities have been introduced to surgeons and members of the surgical team who offer insights into having a career in medicine and surgery. This year, 75 students were invited from five San Diego High Schools to participate in A Day with the American College of Surgeons.

During the Annual Business Meeting of Members, world-renowned pediatric surgeon and prolific surgeon-scientist Henri R. Ford, MD, MHA, FACS, FRCS, FAAP, was elected President-Elect of the American College of Surgeons. With a strong reputation for mentorship and sponsorship, Dr. Ford is passionate about training the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists. He also works to promote health equity and ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven into the educational and clinical fabric of medicine.
Elizabeth R. Benjamin, MD, PhD, FACS, and Jamie Jones Coleman, MD, FACS, led a discussion on productive methods and approaches to making time for family and other obligations outside of work while pursuing career-driven ambitions.
In a Special Session on civilian and military surgical needs in Ukraine, Hnat Herych, MD, PhD, a surgeon from the western city of Lviv, described the difficulty in watching his fellow Ukrainian citizens experience devastating war injuries.
Brendan T. Campbell, MD, MPH, FACS, and Bindi Naik-Mathuria, MD, MPH, FACS, were part of a panel that provided an overview of past efforts by the ACS and other organizations to address gun violence, the current state of the shared response, and the work to come.
Panelists, including Jay A. Redan, MD, FACS, discussed how 3-D imaging and augmented reality can be used to prevent perioperative errors, specifically by improving oncologic margins, reducing blood loss, and reducing hospital length of stay.

In the Herand Abcarian Lecture, David E. Beck, MD, FACS, discussed how applying critical thinking toward each component of perioperative care can lead to advances in workflow efficiencies and improved patient outcomes.
Chair of the ACS Board of Regents Anton N. Sidawy, MD, MPH, FACS, DFSVS, MAMSE, moderated a Town Hall session addressing factors for determining whether a surgeon should continue to operate. “Being too old to operate is not the same thing as retiring,” he said.
Bruce D. Schirmer, MD, FACS, MAMSE, will deliver the inaugural lecture sponsored by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Once considered a fringe specialty, bariatric surgery is now recognized for decreasing the mortality rate of these procedures tenfold over 20 years.
The ACS and American Society of Anesthesiologists held a Special Session addressing how to better develop and advocate for long-term solutions that recognize the full value of surgical care to the health of communities, including overcoming challenges with Medicare and private pay.

The ACS “Power of Quality” Campaign is designed to spark conversation about surgical quality that saves and improves lives. The multiyear initiative promotes wider adoption of ACS Quality Programs, increased surgeon engagement, advocacy for the use of ACS quality metrics in public policy, and patient recognition of the excellence of ACS programs.
