The 2020 American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) awards were presented to winners during the COT virtual business and awards session on October 3, during the closing session of COT Trauma Week. The ACS COT held its virtual meetings during Trauma Week, September 28–October 3, in conjunction with the ACS Clinical Congress.

The National Safety Council Award for Service to Safety awardee is Rochelle Dicker, MD, FACS, Los Angeles, CA. Sponsored by the National Safety Council and nominated by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the ACS COT, the award recognizes outstanding service to safety by surgeons or surgical organizations. The award also acknowledges outstanding contributions to the prevention of accidents that establish or demonstrate methods and results adaptable to other individuals or groups, or that result in stimulating others to undertake or take part in safety projects or programs.

Dr. Dicker was recognized with this award for her commitment to firearm injury prevention and support for victims of firearm violence including leading the development of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs across the U.S. and for developing initiatives to address the social determinants of violence.

  • Roxie M. Albrecht, MD, FACS, Oklahoma City, OK, received the Regional COT Meritorious Service Award for her outstanding contributions to an ACS Regional Committee on Trauma.
  • Dany Westerband, MD, FACS, Silver Spring, MD, received the Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) International Meritorious Award for his outstanding commitment to equalizing access to trauma education and improved patient care internationally, across diverse environments.
  • Travis M. Polk, MD, FACS, Los Angeles, CA, received the ATLS Styner Award for his outstanding commitment to strengthening the foundation of ATLS trauma education principles and expanding the reach of the program to improve patient outcomes.
