At the ACS Committee on Trauma (COT) dinner Monday, Richard J. Fantus, MD, FACS, was presented with a Special Recognition Award for his distinguished service to the ACS COT. Dr. Fantus authored 200 consecutive monthly installments of his Bulletin column, “NTDB data points,” from 2003 to 2019. Dr. Fantus is pictured with Avery B. For the first time, the Thailand Chapter of the College sent two young general surgeons to Clinical Congress. Drs. Rattanadechapitak and Krainara attended lectures and courses and enjoyed visiting the Exhibit Hall. They were also guests at the International Relations Committee’s luncheon honoring International Scholars.
The ACS Division of Education welcomed more than 380 medical students to the Clinical Congress 2019 Medical Student Program on Sunday. This year’s three-day program, developed by the Committee on Medical Student Education, features presentations on lifestyle issues in surgery, decision making on the path to residency, navigating the residency application process, and successful interviewing. Other program highlights include the Medical Student e-Poster Session, a surgical skills workshop, and an interactive mock interview session. Left to right:

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress 2019 officially began Monday morning with the Opening Ceremony, featuring the presentation of the Colors and the Canadian and American national anthems. The ceremony included a brief video featuring 2019–2020 ACS President Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS (pictured at the podium), which focused on the theme, The Joys of Learning, Collaborating, and Giving Back. Dr. Rusch introduced the ACS Officers and Regents, Honorary Fellows, and Past-Presidents; representatives of national and international health care organizations; ACS scholarship recipients; International Guest Scholars; and past recipients of the Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson II Promising Investigator Award. ACS Executive Director David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, provided an overview of the College’s activities.
