The ACS “Power of Quality” Campaign is designed to spark conversation about surgical quality that saves and improves lives. The multiyear initiative promotes wider adoption of ACS Quality Programs, increased surgeon engagement, advocacy for the use of ACS quality metrics in public policy, and patient recognition of the excellence of ACS programs.
In the Scudder Oration on Trauma, Ronald M. Stewart, MD, FACS, will describe significant milestones in trauma care and outline a strategy to drive the ongoing mission of the ACS Commission on Trauma to improve the care for the injured patient.
Omaida C. Velazquez, MD, FACS, will explain how diversity, equity, and inclusion drive excellence in surgery. “It is at the root of a happy surgical workforce and is at the root of curing surgical diseases into the future,” she said.
The inaugural Seminal Works in Surgery will feature authors of recent noteworthy papers on the use of prospective clinical trials and translational research to move surgical care forward, said Edith Tzeng, MD, FACS. Topics include immunotherapy in breast cancer, cardiovascular and liver complications in bariatric surgery, checkpoint inhibitors in rectal cancer, and preventing limb ischemia complications following vascular interventions.
Timothy M. Farrell, MD, FACS, and Laura S. Johnson, MD, FACS, will moderate this discussion to further the understanding of the differences between burnout and moral injury, the language of each, and best practices for coping with the challenges of each one.
When interoperative adverse events occur, the psychological and emotional toll on the surgeon and other participants of the care team can result in Second Victim Syndrome. Haytham M. Kaafarani, MD, MPH, FACS, explained how this impacts job-related stress, including increased anxiety regarding potential future errors, diminished confidence, and reduced job satisfaction.
Daniel Eiferman, MD, MBA, FACS, led an interactive workshop on the interpersonal skills required for building and developing high-functioning teams in stressful environments.
While the scientific sessions of Clinical Congress emphasize current and future surgical practice and technology, the History of Surgery Posters highlight some of the pivotal moments and key figures that paved the way for surgery as we know it today. Twenty posters covering the evolution of procedures, pioneering women in surgery, social movements and their impact on surgical practice, and more are available for viewing through Wednesday in the Exhibit Hall.
