During the Annual Business Meeting of Members, world-renowned pediatric surgeon and prolific surgeon-scientist Henri R. Ford, MD, MHA, FACS, FRCS, FAAP, was elected President-Elect of the American College of Surgeons. With a strong reputation for mentorship and sponsorship, Dr. Ford is passionate about training the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists. He also works to promote health equity and ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven into the educational and clinical fabric of medicine.
Elizabeth R. Benjamin, MD, PhD, FACS, and Jamie Jones Coleman, MD, FACS, led a discussion on productive methods and approaches to making time for family and other obligations outside of work while pursuing career-driven ambitions.
In a Special Session on civilian and military surgical needs in Ukraine, Hnat Herych, MD, PhD, a surgeon from the western city of Lviv, described the difficulty in watching his fellow Ukrainian citizens experience devastating war injuries.
Brendan T. Campbell, MD, MPH, FACS, and Bindi Naik-Mathuria, MD, MPH, FACS, were part of a panel that provided an overview of past efforts by the ACS and other organizations to address gun violence, the current state of the shared response, and the work to come.
Panelists, including Jay A. Redan, MD, FACS, discussed how 3-D imaging and augmented reality can be used to prevent perioperative errors, specifically by improving oncologic margins, reducing blood loss, and reducing hospital length of stay.
ACS President E. Christopher Ellison, MD, FACS, MAMSE, and Regent Kenneth W. Sharp, MD, FACS, MAMSE, will moderate discussion on common questions, debates, issues, and trends in general surgery for the 10th consecutive year. The focus is on practical considerations rather than unusual diseases or operations.
“While a surgeon’s technical skill remains paramount, the complexity of surgical procedures today requires high-performing interprofessional teams that employ practices to enhance communication, coordination, and reliability in ensuring optimal outcomes,” said Juan Sanchez, MD, FACS, one of the moderators of Ten Hot Topics in Patient Safety.
