The 2021 Symposium of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™ will take place Monday, October 25, 12:00 noon–12:55 pm Central Time. The special session, Surgery Residency Training Beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic: Perspectives from the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, and will be co-moderated by L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, DSc(Hon), FACS, FCCM, FRCSEng(Hon), FRCSEd(Hon), FWACS(Hon), FRCSI(Hon), FCS(SA)(Hon), FRCS(Glasg)(Hon), MAMSE, and Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE. The presenters will include Brenessa Lindeman, MD, MEPH, FACS; Jeffrey B. Matthews, MD, FACS, MAMSE; Mohsen Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, MAMSE; and Kathryn Spanknebel, MD, FACS.

This symposium will focus on future transformational changes in surgery resident training based on surgeon-educators’ experiences during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Presentations during the Special Session will describe the impact of the pandemic on surgery residency training, especially with respect to residents, medical students, and faculty. Speakers will highlight the novel education and training methods that surgery residency programs have adopted during the pandemic, describe the organizational adaptations to address challenges associated with the pandemic, and define strategies to ensure optimal surgery residency training during future crises. They will discuss the peer-reviewed online educational resources that the Academy developed during the pandemic, and outline strategies to maintain and advance these resources in the future. E. Christopher Ellison, MD, FACS, MAMSE, and Anton N. Sidawy, MD, MPH, FACS, MAMSE, will join the presenters during the discussion period.

The symposium is open to all Clinical Congress registrants, and all are encouraged to attend, participate in the discussion, and share new ideas.
